Harbin Welding Institute (HWI) was founded in 1956, and formerly subordinated to the First Ministry of Machinery Building Industry of China. It is a national research institute with comprehensive science and technology of welding and joining. In July of 1999, HWI, following up with the reform of science and technology system, transformed into a science and technology enterprise. Now HWI is subordinated to the China Academy of Machinery Science & Technology under the administration of the state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council.

 

HWI has now more than 400 employees, including one member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one National Outstanding Contribution Expert, 8 winners of the Special Allowance of the State Council, and 110 research fellows and senior engineers.

 

The research and development (R&D) fields in HWI include:
  ·Weldability of metallic materials;
  ·Welding (behavior) physics and numerical simulation;
  ·Welding consumables and preparation technology;
  ·Advanced welding processes and automated welding equipment ;
  ·Laser welding technology;
  ·Robot welding technology;  
  ·Hardfacing materials and process;
  ·Thermal cutting process and equipment;
  ·Non-destructive testing and repairing;
  ·Technology information;
  

The Secretariats of China Welding Association, Chinese Welding Society and Chinese Committee for Welding Standardization are all located in HWI. HWI is the supporting unit of the National Welding Materials Quality Supervision & Inspection Center, Mechanical Engineering Flame Cutting Products Quality Supervision & Inspection Center, and National Engineering Research Center for High Quality and Efficiency Welding Technology. HWI also owns two laboratories on welding materials, welding & cutting equipment, and metallic materials, authorized by the State Administration for the Inspection of Import and Export Commodities.

 

HWI has undertaken a great number of national key scientific and technological projects and completed many industrial services aimed at promotion of welding technology. It has also undertaken the task of the Industrial Application of New and High Welding Technology Project. Oriented to the market economy, HWI concentrates on commercialization of research findings, and actively establishes welding-related scientific demonstration bases. HWI-made products have been widely used in petrochemical industry, automobiles, mechanical engineering, metallurgy, bridge building, vehicles, hydroelectricity and nuclear power devices, etc. HWI customers distribute all over the country. With decades of efforts, HWI has achieved outstanding economic profits and remarkable social benefit. 


HWI continuously strengthens the international technology communication and cooperation. It is one of the first batches of institutes that win the crown of International Scientific Cooperation Base at national level. Cooperating with Ukrainian E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute, HWI set up the Harbin-Paton Welding Technology R&D Center. It also collaborates with more than twenty universities and research institutes from all over the world, for examples, TWI, Ohio State University, Edison Welding Institute, Joining and Welding Research Institute of Osaka University, French Welding Institute, BAM, University of Wollongong and KITECH etc.


At present, HWI has developed into a large-scale high-tech company with comprehensive competitiveness that focuses on R&D, industrialization, quality inspection and industrial services. With the rapid development of equipment manufacturing industry in China, HWI will grow into a national welding technology R&D center with strong innovation ability and turn to be a demonstrational scientific and technology enterprise that serves for the key project construction in China.
